SWDA was founded in 1997 to advance the belief that poor women should be empowered to take control of their own lives. (The term "sike" is the Oromo word for the staff that is given to a woman by her mother on her wedding day.) The organization conducts integrated development programs that support sustainable solutions to women’s social, economic and political problems.
