Comité was formed in 1998 directly after Hurricane Mitch battered the north coast of Honduras where the Garifuna communities were virtually ignored by government relief efforts due to a history of discrimination. Comité has since broadened its mission and currently works in a variety of areas, including promoting programs for women, advancing sustainable economic growth and preserving the unique Garífuna culture.
