COPINH was founded in 1993, focusing on the ecological and cultural well-being of the Lenca people of the highlands of western Honduras. The organization’s activities include community organizing and peaceful protest, and its efforts have led to the creation of new municipal governments in indigenous-majority regions and the establishment of health and education services for indigenous people.
