Associate Director of Development, Institutional Grants
Job Description
AJWS is seeking an experienced, mid-career professional to fill a new position created to help broaden our existing support from foundations, corporations and Jewish communal institutions. The Associate Director will be an integral member of the development team, reporting to the Director of Development and responsible for supervising two Development Officers.
Responsibilities
- Developing and implementing strategies for approaching foundations and other prospects for institutional grants;
- Initiating and maintaining appropriate communications with foundation funders and prospects;
- Supervising and/or conducting ongoing research to identify new opportunities for support from foundations and other institutional funders;
- Collaborating with AJWS Board members and senior staff to cultivate and solicit institutional prospects;
- Working with program staff to stay abreast of program content in all departments, and leading efforts by the Institutional Grants Department to translate internal plans into comprehensive and compelling proposal narratives, letters of intent, program descriptions, and so forth.
- Overseeing the writing, preparation and submission of all grant proposals, letters of intent, reports and other written materials by the Development Officers for foundations, other institutional donors and, when needed, major donors as well;
- Maintaining relationships with AJWS program and fiscal staff to ensure the accuracy and clarity of grant proposals and reports;
- Maintaining and, where needed, establishing foundation fundraising files and systems for keeping records, tracking obligations, meeting deadlines, and sustaining outreach to and relationships with institutional funders.
- Serving as the AJWS clearinghouse for all foundation-related information, including giving guidelines, correspondence, and all other communications between AJWS staff and foundations (e.g. program officers).
Qualifications
- B.A. or graduate degree
- Strong commitment to the mission of AJWS
- Knowledge of the economic, political and social issues facing countries in the developing world; international grassroots development experience a plus
- Familiarity with the American Jewish communal world a plus
- Outstanding verbal, writing and editing skills
- Superior professional presentation and interpersonal skills
- Familiarity with the basic tenets of fundraising and the workings of a foundation fundraising operation. Experience in a foundation setting or large non-profit organization a plus
- Record of achievement that demonstrates fund-raising skill and experience
- Computer literacy: Microsoft Office, Excel, Outlook. Spreadsheet and database knowledge (e.g. Raiser's Edge) a plus
- Experience in preparing budgets and financial reports
- Highly organized, detail-oriented and self-motivated
- Reputation for energy, initiative, intellect, flexibility and talent as a team player.
- Ability to balance big-picture thinking with attention to detail
- Great sense of humor
