National Grassroots Organizer

Job Description

AJWS seeks an experienced, creative, entrepreneurial, and well-organized individual to help shape and lead a national constituency-building effort.  The National Grassroots Organizer will build a multi-state organizing effort focused on mobilizing Jewish leaders, synagogues, communities, student groups and individuals to promote social justice globally.  The National Grassroots Organizer will design and implement state-based outreach strategies, including a team of state-based organizers and volunteers, and will help promote key AJWS campaigns on Conflict and Post-Conflict Development, Promoting Global Public Health, Education for all, and Promoting Rights and Equity.  Their work will include coordination with other departments within the organization.  The Organizer is based in the Washington, DC office and will report to the Director of Advocacy.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a long-term plan for grassroots education, organizing and advocacy focused on key states;
  • Coordinate hiring and oversight of regional organizers;
  • Coordinate grassroots campaign planning and execution– including development of goals, timelines, communications, educational materials and advocacy activities;
  • Travel as necessary for workshops or meetings with state-level supporters and partners;
  • Where possible help develop and/or tap into existing state-level coalitions;
  • Develop Advocacy Training and Action Guides for dissemination.

Works with advocacy and other AJWS staff to:

  • Coordinate with synagogues, local and state organizations and other constituents on key campaigns;
  • Provide regular communications with key contacts;
  • Mobilize existing supporters; reach and organize new constituents and groups;
  • Identify and work collaboratively to prepare and disseminate educational materials for supporters;
  • Coordinate an annual grassroots issue and advocacy training conference;
  • Helping to create content to for regular e-alerts;
  • Organize monthly issue and action conference calls to members for campaign outreach;
  • Notify members about new information about issues or legislation;
  • Ensure the collection and correct incorporation into AJWS databases of constituent contacts, and ensuring these are maintained and updated; 
  • In collaboration with other staff, develop and update education and action materials for supporters as needed.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 3 years demonstrated experience in successful national organizing, outreach, or advocacy efforts at a national or state-level organization, and/or non-profit organization.
  • Demonstrated experience hiring, managing and supporting field-based organizers;
  • Demonstrated experience with organizing local educational events, maintaining relationships with local contacts and organizers, and convening and facilitating meetings;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of or experience working on social justice issues relevant to AJWS campaigns;
  • Strong interpersonal and coalition building experiences;
  • Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills;
  • Strong commitment to economic and social justice;
  • Understanding of and commitment to organizing progressive Jewish community on global social justice issues;
  • Understanding and commitment to the principles, concerns, and considerations of the AJWS with regard to issues of race, class, nationality, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, and disabilities;
